About the garden 

A sub-tropical garden with ocean views surrounds the Lutyens-style house at Coleton Fishacre, built by Oswald Milne for Sir Rupert and Lady Dorothy D’Oyly Carte in 1925. Almost frost-free, the garden boasts an impressive range and size of Southern Hemisphere trees and shrubs, with rare plants flourishing in the warm, formal terraces surrounding the house.

At the bottom of the garden lies an informal woodland, densely planted with rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias, alongside exotic species including bananas, ginger lilies and tree ferns. Nearby, visitors can access the rugged, unspoilt stretch of the South West Coast Path.

About the house

 

The house was a country retreat for the D’Oyly Carte family built in the early 1900s. The house has an Arts and crafts exterior and Art Deco interior; visitors are also able to visit the servants’ quarters and there are fabulous views of the garden and sea from many of the rooms.

 

There is a NT shop on site, plus a café which can provide lunch and/or afternoon tea.
